What the system actually does

The U.S. Department of Energy describes a UPS as a combination of converters, switches and an energy-storage device that maintains continuity of load power when input power fails. Different designs handle normal power, transfer and conditioning differently, so the word UPS alone does not describe every behavior.

An inverter-and-battery installation may prioritize longer backup for selected home or office loads. A computer UPS may prioritize fast continuity and controlled shutdown. Product topology, output and compatibility must be verified from current documentation rather than inferred from the category name.
