Wi-Fi is wireless local-area networking built around the IEEE 802.11 standards family. It connects a device to a local wireless network; it is not the internet itself. A device can show a strong Wi-Fi connection while the router, modem, DNS service or internet connection is unavailable.
Simple explanation
A Wi-Fi access point exchanges data by radio with supported devices inside a local network. The router may then connect that network to an internet service, but those are separate links.
Signal bars mainly indicate the local radio link. They do not measure internet service, DNS, congestion or application-server health.
Technical context
IEEE 802.11 defines wireless LAN medium-access-control and physical-layer specifications. A real connection also depends on compatible bands and channels, radio conditions, authentication, encryption, drivers, IP configuration and upstream network services.
Wi-Fi security requires current encryption and strong administration. Do not expose management interfaces or weaken passwords merely to restore connectivity.
Practical example
If one phone works on the same Wi-Fi but a laptop does not, start with the laptop. If every device connects to Wi-Fi but none reaches websites, check the router's upstream status before resetting individual devices.
