Use a reversible thermal-check sequence

  1. Save work, back up important files and record the model, workload, fan behavior, shutdown message and room conditions.
  2. Shut down if the surface is unsafe to touch; otherwise restart once and compare a light known workload with unnecessary apps closed.
  3. Place the laptop on a hard stable surface and remove paper, fabric or accessories blocking the documented intake or exhaust openings.
  4. Check Task Manager or the operating system's supported performance view for a workload that repeatedly drives CPU, GPU, disk or background activity.
  5. Run the exact manufacturer's supported hardware or preboot diagnostics and record any fan or thermal code.
  6. Review model-specific operating-system, thermal-driver and firmware guidance. A firmware update needs stable power, the correct package and a recovery plan.
  7. Escalate repeated shutdowns, fan errors, abnormal noise or unresolved high heat with the recorded evidence rather than continuing stress tests.

Cooling work has mechanical and electrical limits

Dell's current laptop guidance notes that compact systems can become warmer and run their fans more often under heavier workloads. It separately treats thermal shutdowns, BIOS fan errors, heat damage and surfaces too hot to touch as conditions that require model-specific diagnosis or support.

Do not treat a generic temperature posted online as a universal failure threshold. Sensors, limits, fan curves and surface temperatures vary by processor, chassis, firmware and workload.
