SATA stands for Serial ATA. It is an interface family used between host systems and storage devices such as hard drives and some solid-state drives. The correct term SATA 6Gb/s describes an interface signaling rate; it does not guarantee that every connected drive will transfer data at that rate.
Simple explanation
SATA provides a standardized connection and communication path for supported storage devices. Desktop systems commonly use separate data and power connections for 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives.
Some M.2 devices also use SATA internally, which is why the card shape alone cannot identify the interface.
Technical context
SATA-IO recommends generation-neutral capability names such as SATA 6Gb/s instead of the misleading label SATA III. Encoding and protocol overhead mean useful data throughput is below the raw signaling rate.
Host controller, cable, device, firmware and workload all affect a real transfer. A hard drive and SATA SSD can share the interface while having very different access behaviour.
Practical example
When adding a 2.5-inch SATA SSD to a desktop, verify a supported SATA data port, a suitable power connector, physical mounting and operating-system migration plan. Connector fit is necessary but not the complete installation check.
